The film Shakespeare in Love is a perfect way to show new historicism. New Historicism deals with the outside influences of a work. This can include social values of the time, political influences, and economic circumstances. In the film Shakespeare in Love we watch Shakespeare as he lives his life and it is his life that inspires his work.
It seemed that whenever something important happened to Shakespeare in the film it would end up in his plays. Shakespeare was dealing with the class system of the time and the social standing of women. Shakespeare was a lower class than Viola and therefore his relationship was not welcomed by her family. Viola was a young woman and was treated almost as property being traded to another family without being able to decline. These norms of the era are imprinted in the story. If these ideas are not examined when working with the play, the reader is not really getting the whole story. This is why new historicism is an important way to look at literature.
